How Chocolate Will Save Your Skin this Summer
Feel less guilty about indulging in the sweet stuff this season with these lesser known health benefits of eating dark chocolate…
Indulging in a bar, bite or slab of chocolate is one of life’s greatest pleasures, and we at The Bell Inn can’t get enough of it. Having served up a selection of indulgent, chocolatey desserts in our gorgeous New Forest restaurant over time, we have become quite the cocoa connoisseurs, so thought we would bring you some chocolate-related trivia to make you feel better about loading up on chocolate this Easter Time…
Quality dark chocolate contains a decent amount of soluble fibre, minerals and fatty acids, which makes it really quite nutritious… in moderation, of course.
It’s an antioxidant
Dark chocolate is filled with organic compounds, including polyphenols, flavanols and catechins, which are biologically active and function as antioxidants. One study has showed that cocoa contains more antioxidant activity than fruits, including the increasingly popular superfood: Acai berries.
It helps your heart
There is a bioactive compound in cocoa, which can improve blood flow in the arteries and cause a small decrease in blood pressure.
It protects you from the sun
Studies have shown that the flavanols from cocoa can improve blood flow to the skin and can help to protect you from sun damage – this does not mean you will not need sun cream, you most definitely will.
It keeps you smart
One study carried out a few years ago showed that 5 days of consuming high-flavanol cocoa improved blood flow to the brain, helping to stimulate thought and productivity.
So there we have it. Five reasons why it’s okay to eat chocolate this summer.
