Spring in the New Forest

Did you know that there’s 140,000 acres waiting to be explored at the New Forest this spring? That amount of land alone means you’re never short of places to visit in New Forest… whatever the season. Keep reading for our suggestions.

Buckler’s Hard at Beaulieu

Have you always wanted to step back in time? Now you can. Head to the banks of the Beaulieu River and you can see what an 18th century shipbuilding village was really like. Great for history buffs and local-area enthusiasts alike, you can learn how local timber was used to make ships for the British Navy and find out just how Nelson’s fleet was constructed for the battle of Trafalgar. What makes it even better is that in spring, you can hop onto the river cruise that runs every year from Easter onwards.

The Great Outdoors

We can’t mention the New Forest without talking about our fantastic landscape. Mother Nature has been kind to our part of the world, and our ancient woodlands are home to all kinds of wildlife, big and small. From unusual lizards and brand-new beech leaves being formed to gorgeous flowers and herbs, you will even be able to see native birds such as woodlark and nightjar. You can see all the goings-on of nature in its natural, unspoilt habitat. Will you be on the look out for the famous New Forest ponies and their foals? Find out more on the National Trust website.

Exbury Gardens

Do you love foliage, wildlife and flowers? If so, then the New Forest will be your own personal heaven this spring. Head to Exbury Gardens and you can see world famous displays of flowers including rhododendrons and azaleas. Keen walkers can embark on the woodland trail and once your feet are feeling a little weary, jump onto the miniature steam railway to see some recently open to the public gardens. The main house is full of history, making this a real treat of a day out for everyone in the family.
